Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) was intended as a return to form - bringing Sean Connery ( James Bond) into the mix as Indiana’s father - and provided a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Naturally, Raiders received a sequel - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - which proved controversial, taking a darker approach than its predecessor and upping the violence (subsequently bringing about the PG-13 rating that most modern blockbusters hold). Raiders of the Lost Ark released in 1981 to box-office success and critical acclaim, which saw it labeled as an instant classic, with Ford’s portrayal setting a new standard for heroic leading men.
